Why Fasting is Good?

In light of the recent Karwa Chauth festival, it got me thinking about why we observe fasts and keep ourselves away from our favorite food and starve or even keep ourselves thirsty. It's a fitting time to reflect on the health benefits of fasting. Fasting, when done mindfully and under proper guidance, offers several advantages backed by science.

Studies show that intermittent fasting can enhance gut health, giving your digestive system a break and promoting balance in the gut microbiome. Research from the National Institute on Aging suggests fasting improves cellular repair and triggers autophagy, a process that removes damaged cells and regenerates new ones, leading to better overall health.

Furthermore, weight management is another notable benefit. A study in the Journal of Obesity found that intermittent fasting can result in a 3–8% weight reduction over 3–24 weeks. Fasting also helps regulate insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation, improving metabolic health.

Additionally, fasting may reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that periodic fasting may lower cholesterol levels and reduce harmful LDL cholesterol.

Interestingly, a review from Harvard Health Publishing highlights that fasting not only aids physical health but can also promote mental clarity and focus, boosting productivity and cognitive function. So, while the traditional fast of Karwa Chauth and other such “vrats” holds cultural significance, modern fasting practices can offer substantial health benefits when done correctly. Always consult a healthcare professional, especially if you have medical conditions.
