As a doctor, I feel deeply compelled to address the recent controversies involving two recent health myths that need debunking.
Recently, actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu's recommendation to use hydrogen peroxide nebulization (H2O2) distilled with water to combat viral infections; sparked significant debate and criticism from medical professionals. This recommendation was met with strong opposition from Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, also known as The Liver Doc, who labeled the advice as dangerous and called Samantha "health illiterate." He emphasized that hydrogen peroxide is a potent oxidizing agent that can harm the respiratory tract if inhaled.
Samantha responded by acknowledging her lack of expertise & requested a more compassionate communication from medical professionals. She expressed that her intention was not to spread misinformation but to share her personal experience as someone seeking medical treatment.
Further, Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips also criticized Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath for claiming that moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial. This is a harmful myth. Even moderate drinking can lead to liver disease, heart issues, and cancer. The Liver Doc further urged to rely on scientific evidence and to avoid giving misleading health advice.
Eventually, The Liver Doc issued an apology for his harsh words, while still standing by his criticism of the medical advice, he stressed the importance of following evidence-based medical practices and warned against relying on unverified treatments. He pointed out that some of the doctors Samantha referenced in her defense were involved in practices that are not scientifically supported.
As a gastro surgeon, irrelevant to the manner of conveying his concerns; I echo The Liver Doc’s sentiments. Why? Because I too am a man of medical science and see things from that perspective.
The consumption of hydrogen peroxide, even in diluted forms, can result in severe health issues, including:
Respiratory Irritation/Damage through Inhalation
Gastrointestinal Issues
Systemic Toxicity with High doses
These potential risks underscore the importance of adhering to treatments and advice backed by scientific research and clinical evidence. Avoid self-medication & dubious health tips, especially from non-expert sources.
I urge you to always consult qualified medical professionals for health issues and follow evidence-based practices to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Let's continue to prioritize accuracy & compassion in all medical discussions. Together, we can build a well-informed and healthy community.
Stay healthy, stay GastroSure!
